  • About the Project

Sentient recently completed a Virtual Reality (VR) training experience for ERGT; an immersive, experiential learning provider for safety and emergency response training in Australia. This project was a unique one, as it was aimed to be used during the APPEA conference where ERGT would have their Sikorsky helicopter on site.

The aim for this project was to show the importance of continued and updated training as the retention of all training is directly correlated to repetition. This is especially true when placed in a chaotic situation (which ERGT specialise in). By blending the advantages of both the physical helicopter and the flexibility of VR we aimed to create an immersive ‘ditching training’ module which conference patrons would be able to experience during their time at APPEA.

    CHALLENGE:

To build an immersive VR experience which foregoes traditional controller driven controls in favour of a new ‘hand tracking’ scheme which briefly teaches the user about helicopter ditching steps before they are tested on their retention during a chaotic ditching scenario. All the while working within the limited time constraints created by the conference’s deadline.

    SOLUTION:

To develop a training module which includes a true to scale helicopter and realistic environment which succinctly teaches and tests the ditching steps in a simulated helicopter ditching scenario.

    OUTCOME:

Through close collaborative work with ERGT, Sentient produced a product which reinforces the importance of training that ERGT provides to their customers. Being able to blend the tactile elements of ERGT’s Sikorsky helicopter with Sentient’s simulated ditching experience, alongside incorporating the new hand tracking technology, we were able to provide an experience which truly encapsulates the user in immersion. Bringing the best of both the physical and simulated worlds together to create a complementary experience for all that were put through it.
